Remembering 9/11

As a graphic designer, I jump at the chance to work on projects that hold special meaning. So when I was assigned to work on an internal project honoring the 10th anniversary of 9/11, I was excited, but I also felt some trepidation. 9/11 is my generation’s JFK assassination. We all remember where we were. I was in my college dorm room with my two roommates, watching in shocked silence as horrible events unfolded on a tiny, 13 inch television screen. How would it make me feel to revisit the tragedy of that day?

As I began to wade through mountains of research, YouTube videos of the towers collapsing, helicopter footage shot by the NYPD, audio recordings of phone calls from trapped and frightened victims, and obituaries of the almost 3,000 people who were killed, I began to better understand the enormity of what had been lost that day. A death toll is just a number. It’s not a mother, uncle, best friend, or sister.

In the end, we decided to remember individuals, ordinary people who died on 9/11. I happened across an online newsletter organized by Arnie Korotkin. If it has to do with 9/11, he’s probably in the know. I sent him an email asking if the people on his mailing list might be interested in sharing memories and photos about the person they had lost. He thought they might be, and he forwarded my request to the thousands of contacts on his list. I started getting emails and phone calls from 9/11 family members. They’re a tight knit and determined group, these 9/11 families. They’ve lost so much, but many of them have turned tragedy into hope through scholarship funds or foundations to help raise money for causes they care deeply about.

The people that contacted me believe hope can flourish even among the ruins of devastation. Ever since that fateful day, they’ve been a force for change in our nation and world. Their stories have saddened me and inspired me at the same time. I hope others who watch our video also feel called to action.

It’s the least we can do to remember the 2,996 people who were killed ten years ago.

9/11 Anniversary Tribute

The ten-year anniversary of 9/11 is upon us. This day was a moment in time many of us will never forget. We at Blue Pony have created a video in memory of the loved ones who were lost and in honor of those brave souls who served on that tragic day.

During the production of this video, our team shifted through many emotions as we looked at some of the personal details of this tragedy. We remember many details surrounding those catastophic moments. Feel free to share with us your memories of this tragic day in American history.

Here is our tribute to all those affected.

Is Dayparting for You?

A look at some dayparting within media signage.

Should dayparting be a part of your digital signage deployment?

Dayparting is something that television and radio have been practicing for years, so why doesn’t digital signage always take the extra time to daypart as they do? What is dayparting? Dayparting is the act of scheduling specific ads to play at a specific time, to target a specific audience. For example, a coffee shop ad is much more appropriate in the morning whereas a Happy Hour ad would be much more effective later in the day. We have been encouraging our Digital Signage clients to use dayparting if it is relevant for their deployment and Media Signage gives us the tools to do so. The Media Signage software enables you to create complex campaigns, do advanced campaign scheduling, dayparting, and has many other great features. To learn more about dayparting or the Media Signage Software please contact Blue Pony.

3D Mapping Experience

3D mapping is a growing technology used in a variety of applications. It involves projecting an animation or image onto a 3D surface. Blue Pony, in collaboration with A&V Company and Sweetwater Sound, completed a project last month involving this exciting technology for Premier Healthcare’s annual conference. The project took 8 weeks to complete with many hours of brainstorming, recording, animating, and programming. All team members took part in a weekly conference call to discuss ideas and present the status of their progress.

Initial meetings involved discussing the message, style, and visual ideas with Premier in order to meet their objective for the video. Sweetwater Sound wrote original song lyrics and instrumentation, and produced the record. A&V Company was the production company in charge of stage set-up and equipment installation and selection. Blue Pony coordinated all efforts and designed the visuals. This included conceptual development, illustrated storyboards, 2D and 3D animation techniques and video assembly. The completed video was then projected and mapped onto 3 dimensional stage walls. Blue Pony thoroughly enjoyed working on this project and having a team member on-site to see the video come to life at the conference. To learn more about this project and 3D projection mapping contact one of our team members today.

Babes In The Woods

When Projection Presentation Technologies came to us with an idea for the American Association of Pediatrics Annual Conference intro animation, they told us they wanted to do something different.  Little did we know that “different” would evolve into perhaps the most complex animation we’ve ever created here at Blue Pony.  As designers we’re always challenging ourselves to learn new techniques and to push the limits of our creative abilities.  When the story idea was described, a baby who finds a tiny pine cone in the Redwood Forest and then grows throughout the years along with the tree, we knew we’d need to take a different approach to find a way to make his dream come to life.

We started with static storyboards and then moved to animatics (a moving storyboard) to work out camera angles and timing.   After several rounds of revisions we had a solid concept that the client was excited about.

Now we just needed to figure out what kind of technique to use.  Usually, we create content using existing assets like stock photography and design elements.  Due to the complexity of the story and the need for our little baby to age throughout the animation, we decided to create all the elements ourselves.  We hand drew everything, from the forest backgrounds to the baby.  Then we imported the drawings into AfterEffects and created puppets that could be key frame animated.  It was a time consuming and detailed process, but it was worth it.  Creating everything ourselves allowed us to dream big.

When we had completed the animation, we added in music and sound effects to complete the effect.  The clients loved the finished product and we were excited to have been able to work on a project that allowed us to flex our creative muscles.

LDI 2010 Recap

LDI (Lighting Dimensions International) 2010 was, in a word, awesome!  Blue Pony has serious roots in this industry, being a sister company to Apollo Design Technology.  Talking with Lighting Designers and Production companies for three days was just another reminder . . .  everyone is using digital content.  The consistent request was to bring back and increase our stock content library and to assist corporate clients with custom content, and we will deliver.  One t-shirt summed it up best when dealing with the rock and roll crowd: “life is a freak show, we just do the lighting.”

Blue Pony just does the visual media design and we love it. :-)
