When Blue Pony was tasked with creating a campaign for Cummins Marine and their booth at the 2012 WorkBoat Show, we had to create a unifying design across multiple platforms. We created four videos, accessed through large touchscreen monitors, three informative animations for the iPad, and one animated video exposing the inner workings of a Cummins engine. Working on different devices meant that we had to pay attention to get our resolutions exactly correct while staying aware of what the other designers were doing. If one of us created a piece that didn’t fit in with the others, it would stand out in a bad way once the device was installed in the booth.
On a project like this, it’s important to always remember the purpose of the piece you’re creating. In this case, the videos needed to convey basic information about Cummins engines, the history of the company and some very specific details about specific models. However, this was to be located at a trade show, a place filled to the brim with distractions. That’s why the videos also needed to be engaging and eye-catching. Following the guidelines set in place by Cummins for their brand, we were able to create a general look that worked well with each piece and tied them all together. In the end, each video stood on it’s own, but was also obviously a part of the larger whole.
